When we reviewed the tx2000′s predecessor, aptly named the tx1000, last July, we found it to be an interesting machine. It was unique in being one of several only entertainment-minded laptops with a resistive digitizer display. HP has refreshed the tx1000 using the tx2000, which brings a technology refresh in addition to a full active WACOM digitizer.

We found the design of the tx2000 to become strikingly similar to the previous model. Whilst the previous model combined black and silver cues, creating a piecemeal effect, the new design swaps the silver hinge having a black one for much more uniform style. The exact same goes for that inside, where the black keyboard was replaced with a silver a single, matching the base. The tx2000 also sports an ‘Echo’ imprint, which looks like crop-circles, on both the lid and also the palmrests, unlike the ‘wave’ imprint that was present about the tx1000.

The hinge appears almost identical to the previous model, although HP decided to emblazon a helpful arrow to tell you which way the hinge turns. Once you turn the LCD close to (the right way) it snaps closed in four locations to tablet type. The clasps won’t automatically snap in place, so you must ensure you apply equal pressure.

The speakers remain on the hinge itself, which is an excellent design choice. In real-world usage the classic laptop computer position is poorly suited for several activities, including watching videos. If you’re on a plane, for instance, the normal laptop position is generally at odds with the seat facing you. Try turning the monitor close to and watching from that position. You’ll be glad the speakers turned with the picture.

The keyboard remains nearly identical towards the tx1000, which is to say smooth with excellent tactile feedback. The crucial noise is on the loud side, but some break-in will reduce that somewhat. The keyboard was changed to silver to match the base, and the right shift crucial was enlarged to full-size. The whole keyboard feels less cramped than the original. I have larger-than-average hands, making this high about the totem pole for me.

Fortunately, the touchpad is the same a single we came to appreciate about the tx1000. It uses an fascinating inverted bump style for superb tactile feel, and a separate bar on the right for scrolling. This seems to work much better than other laptops, which combine the scrollbar using the touchpad. Above the touchpad is a silver switch which turns the touchpad on or off, if you’re using an alternate input device or to avoid accidental touch recognition.

We were interested to see what the TL-66 could muster. It posted a Worldbench 6 score of 53, which isn’t very impressive. 3DMark ’06 scored a paltry 192 3dMarks. The Turion X2 processor helped post a much more respectable 2313 utilizing PCMark Vantage.

Battery Life about the tx2000 was above-average given the small 4-cell battery. We managed to squeeze almost four hours of general use, although that was light on the stylus. If you switch the tx2000 to performance mode or use the digitizer exclusively, you may see lower times. It is critical to note that an optional 6-cell battery is available, although this raises the unit’s height from 1.23″ 1.52″.

The tx2000 was relatively silent throughout general use and high-load testing. This is attributed to the improvement from the fan location, which makes a much more direct outlet and reduces heat buildup. For a passing fancy token, the heat emanating from the vent could be uncomfortably warm if the vent is even slightly obstructed. The only time heat became an issue was when using the laptop in tablet type resting on my lap.

When placed into tablet type, the screen orients so the fan is facing directly toward you. That means you have a substantial amount of hot air blowing directly onto your leg. It appears like HP didn’t have a option, since the opposite end housed the energy plug. You have to pick between a energy cord jabbing your leg or a load of hot air. After 30 seconds of use, I decided on the energy cord.

Jobs showed a quick view of the email and moved on to the photos. One can switch the device from portrait to landscape view. Users can get events, places and faces as well as flick left or right through photos. He further showed the slideshow of Paris on the Ipad. In calendars, users can drag their fingers over the events to get a weekly or a daily view.

Jobs went on to the maps application and viewed the Eiffel Tower, taps a corner to go to a satellite view. Then he moved onto the events current location in San Francisco. He then typed in sushi using the ipad virtual keyboard and found nearby sushi places, which showed one local sushi restaurant called Sushi Boat. Jobs then showed off youtube videos, played an HD video of a surfing dog.

The apple ipad will be available with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of Flash storage. It will also have wi-fi,bluetooth, speaker, microphone, compass and 30 pin connector to plug into iPod accessories.

Price of ipad: 9 for 16GB, non 3G, 32GB would cost 9 and 64GB will carry a price tag of 9. For a 3G model, the 16Gb will be for 9, 32GB will cost  9 and 64GB will be priced for 9.

What’s more a form factor is important as it should be something folding, something that can be easily shuffled into a standard case, something that will definitely represent a REAL diary or a notepad as we, humans are painfully accustomed to traditional forms and tend to introduce innovations to familiar objects. 

iPad is a bit an entertainment focused gadget, splendid for web surfing, social networking, image viewing and video streaming. It’s nice to boast of it when in teenagers’ band, to take it to bed with a cup of your favorite tea, a packet of biscuits and a purring pet. But it seems a bit out-of-place in a formal environment when billions-worth deals are discussed and changing nations’ destiny contracts are signed. Although i have an Apple cover for my iPad, like so many electronic devices, there are numerous accessories that are always needed in order to maintain the device. This carrying case is a great adjunct for the iPad. It is relatively small, but large enough to handle the iPad, the keyboard, and various cables, chargers and cleaning cloths, as well as space for a small manual. There is even enough space to tuck in your iPod or iPhone.

I highly recommend this case. Even its price makes it an excellent buy.

The One Laptop Per Child Program or OLPC is an initiative to get every child, primarily in Africa, a new laptop.  The initial goal was to offer  a 0 laptop, but unexpected costs drove it much higher.  Now, OLPC is making another push to deliver more affordable technology by building a tablet computer.

This tablet is supposed to cost around although many debate if they will be able to hit that price point exactly.  It is a touch screen device giving it complete flexibility and portability.  It does not have a physical keyboard, but a touchscreen keyboard can be used on the tablet’s screen.

There is a unique philosophy that the developers are taking on this tablet.  There are no ports on it like USB or even a power plug.  The idea is that these devices might be used in areas with quite a bit of dirt and limiting access to dust and dirt might extend the life of the devices.  To charge it, it’s likely they will be laid on top of a magnetic charger of some kind like the Palm Pre currently does.

However, the missing USB ports could become a potential problem.  USB would allow for external keyboards and other hardware like flash drives.  It would be nice if there was a way to install information onto these tablets without needing internet access which many children in third world nations realistically are not going to have.

If there was a flash drive available, it would offer an easy way to distribute educational applications, audio, and reading materials for children to learn from.  Hopefully, what comes shipped with the unit will be sufficient to educate children for thousands of hours since there isn’t an easy way to get more material onto the device without an internet connection.

The new OLPC tablet is intended to cost less than 0.  There are absolutely no ports for external devices on this touchscreen tablet.  While this could offer some advantages, it will also take away the ability to add additional hardware and external memory.
